Amazonite: Russian
Nicknamed the "Amazon Stone," Russian amazonite is a beautiful green-blue member of the feldspar family. Similar to jade in appearance, amazonite is surprisingly not from the Amazon, but originated in mountains of Russia.
Originally amazonite was called 'Amazon Stone.' It was later renamed amazonite. Amazonite was named for the Amazon region of South America. Early jade deposits in the Amazon were misidentified as a new stone. When a deposit of similar gemstone was located in Russia, it was dubbed Amazonite, and the misnomer stuck. Ironically, no Amazonite has ever been found in the Amazon. Amazonite is a blue-green variety of the orthoclase feldspar family. It was originally thought that copper particles lent amazonite its lush color, similar to turquoise or Paraiba tourmaline. However, recent studies suggest that microscopic lead and water infusions are the source of the beautiful blue-green. Premium amazonite typically displays more green than blue. Amazonite is a prized gemstone in China because of its resemblance to jade. High demand from the Chinese gemstone market makes this a difficult stone to find in the United States.
- Brazilian legend says the Amazon people gave visitors to their region green stones as gifts. Since amazonite has not been found in the Amazon, these green stones are now believed to be jade or emerald.
- Amazonite amulets were found in the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamen.

Russian Amazonite can be found in a few known locations, however, the best quality stones are found in Russia. Located 50 miles southwest of Chelyabinsk, Russia, in the area of Miass in the Ilmen Mountains, Russian Amazonite is sourced from granitic rocks.
